Kathleen R. Schlemme Wisconsin Rapids, WI. On July 28, 2011, at the age of 91, Kathleen went to be with Our Lord, the angels, and her beloved husband of 65 years. Born in Cascade, Iowa on April 8, 1920, to Catherine (Kit Hickey)and Lawrence (Doc) Barrett, Kathleen attended and graduated from St. Martins' Schools. She married her lifelong partner, Elmer Schlemme, on Dec. 27, 1941 at St. Martin's Church in Cascade, IA and they spent the remainder of WW II at Opalacha Naval Base in Florida. In 1945, they returned to Cascade, IA., where they farmed until Elmer's illness offered them the opportunity to change careers. Taking a transfer in 1965, they moved to Lake Wissota in Chippewa Falls, WI., where they lived until retiring for the second time. Since 1988, they had lived as retirees in Interlachen, FL. among many friends and family. Due to health reasons, they returned to Wisconsin in the summer of 2006. Kathleen was a homemaker, baker, gardener, youth educator through 4H, and an active volunteer at St. Martins Catholic Church in Cascade, Notre Dame Parish in Chippewa Falls, and St. John ,the Evangelist Parish in Interlachen. She and Elmer designed and constructed the Villa Riva Mobile Home Park in Chippewa Falls after Elmer's first retirement. About this time, Kathleen discovered her love for the art of Fine Rug Hooking. She found ladies in Eau Claire to learn from, to dye wool with, and also exhibited her art at shows in Wisconsin and in Decorah, IA. She eventually shared her amazing talent by teaching her prize winning skills to others in the area. Kathleen loved a good game of cards, traveling and shopping with Winona, watching QVC, CNN and the "Stocks", playing Yahtzee, Bingo, and especially the bus trips to Biloxi ! And let's not forget Bingo, Bingo, Bingo! Preceding her in death, loving and patient husband of 65 years, Elmer, March 29, 2007; her parents, Kit and Doc Barrett, Cascade IA.; sisters Dolores Grace, Utah, Elizabeth Gaddis, Interlachen FL, Ramona Cox Anderson, Ormond, FL, brother James Barrett, San Mateo, Fl.; brothers-in-law Ray Cox ,Sam Anderson, Walley Gaddis, Joseph Schemmel, Carl Hammond; and son-in-law Robert Carr. Kathleen is survived by her daughter Carol Carr, Nekoosa WI.; grandchildren, Kimberly Carr(Dan) Hanson of Andover MN., and Christopher (Lorrie) Carr, of Verona WI. She was Grandma Sweetie Face to great-grandchildren Graham, Miles, Finnleigh Hanson and Julia and Ryan Carr. Sister Muriel Schemmel resides in Interlachen, FL. and sister Faith Hammond in Tryon, NC. She leaves a special niece, Sonya Gaddis (Paul) Burke in Interlachen, Fl. and many more nieces and nephews of the Barrett and Schlemme families. A private family gathering will be held at the Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, IA on Sunday evening , July 31 from 6 to 8p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mathias Catholic Church, Cascade, IA August 1 at 10a.m. Burial service to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Cascade.
