Obituary announcement Dateline: Dyersville

Thomas V. Lukan, 80 of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 4:35 p.m., at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

Friends and relatives of Tom may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 17, 2012 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 5:00 p.m. and a Legion Service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

Services for Tom will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, Iowa, with Rev. Noah Diehm officiating. Burial will be held in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville with Military honors afforded by the Dyersville American Legion Post #137.

Tom was born on April 6, 1932 in Dyersville, Iowa, son of Anton and Helen (Tobin) Lukan. He received his education in the St. Francis Xavier School in Dyersville. On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Shirley Tauke at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, Iowa. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Fondell and Sons and other various construction companies for over 30 years.

Tom was an Army Veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Dyersville and the Dyersville American Legion Post #137 for 55 years where he served as Past Commander and a variety of other officer positions.

Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing (especially with his children), as well as playing cards. He was a very loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lukan of Dyersville, IA; five children, Tim (Janet) Lukan of Cedar Rapids, IA, Ted (Susan) Lukan of Minneapolis, MN, Patrick (Laura) Lukan of Chicago, IL, Lori (Jeff) Driscoll of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Mike (Gina) Lukan of Marion, I A; 10 grandchildren, Matthew, David, and Meghan Lukan, Breanna, Lauren,and Noah Lukan, Jessica and Ashley Driscoll, Olivia and Madilyn Lukan; five siblings, Mary (Walt) Osterhaus of Independence, IA, Donna (Jack) Ronan of Gardner, KS, Robert Lukan of Scottsdale, AZ, Bill Lukan of Great River, NY, and Wayne (Bernadine) Lukan of Palos Heights, IL; step brothers, Jerry and Dale Lukan; and a step sister, Joanie Ramler.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Fr. Ken Lukan; a step sister, Betty; and a sister-in-law, June Lukan.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Beckman Catholic High School.
