Obituary announcement Dateline: Peosta

Philip D. McDonald, 89, of Peosta, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at 1:20 a.m. at the Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of Philip may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, Iowa where a wake service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 9:00 a.m., on Friday, July 6, 2012 at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta, Iowa.

Services for Philip will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2012 at St. John’s the Baptist with Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating. Burial will be held in St. John’s Cemetery in Centralia, Iowa, with Full Military Honors by the Epworth American Legion John White Post #650.

Philip was born December 7, 1922 in Peosta, Iowa, son of Patrick and Mathilda (Mahoney) McDonald. He is a graduate of St. John’s High School in Peosta, Iowa. On February 13, 1945 he was united in marriage to Margaret McCarthy at Holy Family Catholic Church in New Melleray, (Peosta), IA. He was a self employed carpenter until his retirement in 1992. He was an Army Air Corp veteran, having been a pilot in the B-17’s during World War II.

He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading about U.S. History. He enjoyed sharing many of his war time stories with his children and grandchildren. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a great gardener and he loved to share his fresh garden produce with others. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret McDonald of Peosta, IA; four children, Judith (Ronald) Zwolinski of Plainfield, IL, James (Myrt) McDonald of Dubuque, IA, Maureen (Al) Faber of Hopkinton, IA, and Bonnie (Rod) Wagner of Farley, IA; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; five siblings, Mary Lehnhoff of East Dubuque, IL, Velma Usher of Minneapolis, MN, Ellen (Charles) Schmadeke of Solon, IA, Kay (Tom) Horsfield of Dodgeville, WI, Francis “Buzz” (Darlene) McDonald; four sisters-in-law, Marlene Chamberlain of Platteville, WI, Jackie McDonald of Peosta, IA, Geraldine McCarthy of Bernard, IA and Mary Miller of Dubuque, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Callista Spielman and Eileen in infancy; and six brothers, Raymond, Vincent, William, Patrick, Francis and Philip in infancy
