C. Patrick Smith, 85, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Epworth, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa surrounded by his loving family.
Visitation for Pat will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, Iowa where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Services for Pat will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa with Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be held in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Epworth, Iowa.
Patrick was born February 19, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of James C. "Cy" and Clara (Hannan) Smith. He is a graduate of Western Dubuque High School and Loras College in Dubuque where he received his BA in Economics and Finance. On May 30, 1960, he was united in marriage to Donna McDermott at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa.
Pat was employed at the former Dubuque Packing Co. After receiving his BA, He was a Financial Counselor and Insurance Agent for Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Union Local #150, as well as a lifelong member of the Democratic Party and served on Dubuque County Democratic Central Committee, and as Delegate to County, District and State Democratic Conventions.
Pat excelled at sports in High School in both basketball and baseball. He continued his love of athletics as a lifelong athlete and loved attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events.
He was also a member of the National Ski Patrol at Sundown Mountain Lodge for over 35 years and spent a lot of time skiing in the winter and boating the Mississippi in the summer. Most of all he spent his life being a kind and generous person, and family was always his priority. Patrick will be deeply missed by family and friends who loved him dearly.
He is survived by his spouse, Donna Smith of Dubuque; his children, Sheree Smith-Martinez (Maj. Michael Martinez, MD) of Cedar Falls, and their children, Emiliano and Mateo; Shawn Smith (Judy) of Birmingham, MI and their children, Gabriella, Sofia and Lucas; Dana Heming (Lt. Com. James Heming DO) of Davisburg, MI and their children, Olivia, Lauren, Liam, and Miles; Sasha Smith of Dubuque, and Sabrina Smith of North Liberty, IA; Three sisters Phyllis (Gary) Astgen, of East Dubuque, IL, Kathleen (Wally) Link, of Dyersville, and Rita Benter, of Dubuque; two brothers, John Smith, of Epworth, and Raphael Smith, of West LaFayette, IN.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Darlene Sexton of Asbury, Bill Brown, of Solon, Patrick (Marva) McDermott of Keizer, OR, Bernard "Buzz" (Mary) McDermott of Dubuque, Terry (Connie) McDermott of Dubuque; Sharon (Dave) Reardon of Dubuque, Mary (Gerry) McDermott-Weydert of Asbury, Bonnie (Neal) Gotto of New Vienna, Debby Forkenbrock of Epworth, and Rhonda (Tom) Gotto of Epworth.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene Smith, Richard Smith, and Dennis Smith; a sister, Ann Brown; father and mother-in-law, Donald "Benny" and Coletta (Hoffmann) McDermott; sisters-in-law, Lois Smith, Chere Smith, and Margaret "Peggy" (John) Gansen; two brothers-in-law, James McDermott, and Jerry Forkenbrock.
