Obituary

Donald F. Elgin, 81, of Dyersville, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Oak Crest Manor in Dyersville, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

Friends and relatives of Don may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Services for Don will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Basilica St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Dyersville, Iowa, with Rev. Dennis Quint officiating. Concelebrating will be Rev. Carl Ries. Burial will be held in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville, Iowa.

Don was born August 19, 1935 in Bankston, Iowa, son of Nick and Stella V. (Hess) Elgin. He received his education in the rural country schools in Bankston. On October 7, 1958 he was united in marriage to Mae Duggan at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Bankston, Iowa. He was a member of St. Francis Parish in Dyersville, Iowa.
Don was employed with M.F. Goerdt Construction for 20 years. He then farmed for 40 years in the Worthington/Dyersville area. He enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, fishing, traveling with his wife and family, playing cards and a good Busch Light. He especially loved to spend time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Elgin of Dyersville, IA,; five children, Julie (Steve) Nebel of Dubuque, IA, Jane (Tony) Salow of Earlville, IA, Dave (Cheryl) Elgin of Edmond, OK, Mark (Diane) Elgin of Dyersville, IA, and Peggy (Marti) Petlon of Manchester, IA; 18 grandchildren, Nicole Trotter, Matt Nebel, Kimberly Koos, and Rachel Nebel, Tom, Nick, Mike and Olivia Salow, Emily, Haleigh and Don Elgin, Jackie Doelz, Whitney Casper, Cassandra Wood and Morgan Elgin, Ben, Carson and Lena Petlon; 16 great grandchildren, Emma, Avery and Weston Trotter, Jaren and Wyatt Nebel, Grace and Henry Koos, and Lennon Healey, Aidan and Taylor Salow, Keighan Lubben, Parker, Blake, and Jordynn Doelz, Raelee Wood and Harper Casper; seven sisters, Dorothy Elgin of Dubuque, IA, Rosemary Kruse of Bankston, IA, Lou Ann Deutmeyer of Dyersville, IA, Sharon Ludwig of Dyersville, IA, Betty (Dave) Ludwig of Worthington, IA, Linda Elgin of Dubuque, IA, and Madonna (Dan) Gibbs of Farley, IA; three brothers; Robert (Gladys) Elgin of Peosta, IA, Willis (Dorothy) Elgin of Delhi, IA , Marvin Elgin of Bankston, IA; brothers-in-law, Vince Ehrlich, Donald Duggan, William (Jane) Duggan, and Bill Weber all of Dubuque, IA and Eugene Ahmann of Farley, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Three sisters, Grace (Larry) Davis, Dianne Ehrlich, and Darlene (Ralph) Kramer; one brother, James (Theresa) Elgin; his father and mother-in-law, Henry and Lena Duggan; four brothers-in-law, Dan Kruse, Bill Deutmeyer, Thomas Ludwig, and John "Red"Duggan; three sisters-in-law, Ann Weber, Helen Ahmann and Jeannie Duggan; and a niece, Colleen Drees and nephews, Jim Davis and Kerry Kruse.
