Eleanor C. Burke, 87, of Bernard, Iowa passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade, Iowa.
Friends and relatives of Eleanor may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa where a wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2016 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Garryowen, Iowa.
Services for Eleanor will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 1, 2016 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Garryowen, Iowa with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating and Rev. Joe McDermott concelebrating. Burial was held in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Garryowen, Iowa.
Eleanor was born January 12, 1929 in Cascade, Iowa, daughter of John P. and Lena (Hosch) Kurt. She received her education at St. Mary's in Cascade, Iowa. On August 5, 1952 she was united in marriage to Patrick J. Burke at St. Mary's Catholic church in Cascade, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 11, 1999.
After her marriage, Eleanor and Pat raised their family in South Garryowen. Family was very important to Eleanor and she took pride in making a happy home. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning and cooking. She served many roles at St Aloysius Catholic Church and was active in the parish choir, Altar and Rosary Societies. Eleanor was a 4-H leader for many years and a past president of West Dubuque Band Parents Association. After moving to the farm on Bernard Road in 1974, she became a member of the St Patrick's Garryowen Altar and Rosary Societies, Bernard Commercial Club and Christ the King Mother's Club. She was employed at the Flower Garden in Cascade and took pleasure in babysitting.
She is survived by two sons, Mike (Coleen) Burke of Bernard, IA and Jerry (Jan) Burke of San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Diane (Steve) Frank of Storm Lake, IA and Sharon (Raymond) Garcia of Pecatonica, IL; six grandchildren, Benjamin and Kurt Garcia, Timothy and Annette Frank and Daniel and Lauren Burke; three great grandchildren, Logan, Corben and Gavin Garcia; three siblings, Carl Kurt, Melvin (Lavonne) Kurt and Leon (Trudy) Kurt all of Cascade, IA.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; her husband; mother and father in law Earl and Madeline Burke; five brothers, Sam (Theresa "Tessie") Kurt, Joe (Jane) Kurt, Herbert (Dorothy "Dottie") Kurt, Fred (Alvina) Kurt and Andrew Kurt; three sisters, Anna Mae (Bill) Lehmann, Margaret Ann (Ralph) Otting and Mary (Wilfred "Bubbles") Dolphin; two brothers-in-law, Dale (Theresa) Burke and Howard Burke; three sisters-in-law, Janice Tetterton, Lois Scarff and Mary Lou Kurt.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in memory of Eleanor C. Burke.
