Ernest "Ernie" L. Akers, 88, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Epworth passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025, at Hawkeye Care Center in Asbury, Iowa.

Visitation for Ernie will be held from 10 to 12 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Epworth United Methodist Church in Epworth, Iowa, where a Memorial Service for Ernie will be held at Noon with Pastor Annie Walker presiding.  Burial will be held at a later date in Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City.

Ernie was born on August 26, 1936, in Alburnett, Iowa, son of Henry and Hazel (Hackert) Akers.  He was a graduate of Central City High School in Central City, Iowa and attended Iowa State University in Ames.  He was united in marriage to Donna Taylor on December 31, 1956, Anamosa Methodist Church in Anamosa, Iowa.

He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Epworth. Ernie was also a past member of Kiwanis International, the Dyersville Wood Carvers, and the Epworth City Council.

Ernie was born into farming and was a farmer at heart.   Ernie started working at Marion Feed Center in Marion and then received a job at Power Equipment in Dubuque, which brought him and his family to the Dubuque area to live.  He later worked as a heavy Equipment operator at Nichol Construction, and Goerdt Construction, and then worked at Al Main Cabinetry.  Ernie enjoyed woodworking, carving, and fishing in his spare time.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna Akers of Dubuque, two daughters, Lisa (Tom) Driscoll of Dubuque, and Linda (Joel) Mozena of Asbury; six grandchildren, Josh (Sarah) Mozena, Todd (Kendra) Mozena, Cora (Nick) Roe, Megan (Aaron) Witter, Amanda Akers, and Evan Akers; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Lois Yerkes of Walker; Sister-in-law, Susan (Dave) Hartwell of Iowa City; brother-in-law, Larry Fuller of Central City.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Curtis A. (Suzanne) Akers on April 9, 2022; two sisters Dora Lea, and Erma E. Akers; Father and Mother-in-law, William E. & Viola (Wilcox) Taylor; sister-in-law, Ellen Fuller; and brothers-in-law, LeRoy "Butch" Taylor and Richard Yerkes.
