Peosta

Obituary

Jane Anne "Janie" Hoctel, 57, of Peosta, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025. She was born on April 29, 1968, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late James H. Hoctel and Diana L. (née Gregory) Hoctel.

Janie grew up in Davenport, Iowa, where she was raised alongside her four siblings after her family moved there when she was very young. She graduated from Davenport West High School and later pursued a career as a barber. For many years, she worked at Devil's Glen Barber Shop in Bettendorf, Iowa, where she developed lasting friendships with her clients and took joy in watching their families grow.

A compassionate soul with a sharp sense of humor, Janie lived a full and vibrant life. From a young age, she had a deep love for dogs, a passion that continued throughout her life. She was an active member of the Mississippi Valley Retriever Club and served as club president for several years. She was well known for her skill in training both dogs and their owners and traveled extensively with her best friend, Dwayne Durant, competing in Hunt Tests from Canada to Louisiana. Along the way, she built lasting friendships and a close-knit community.

Later in life, Janie settled in Peosta, Iowa, where she embraced the rural lifestyle. She had a green thumb and took great pleasure in gardening, cooking, and canning. Her homemade jams, pickles, and pasta sauce were beloved by all who received them — her "jars of deliciousness" will be sorely missed.

Above all else, Janie's greatest joy was her dogs, especially the puppies. Her bond with them was deep and unwavering, and her love for animals was a defining part of who she was.

Janie is survived by her best friend, Dwayne Durant of Peosta, IA; her sister Ellen "Gigi" Hoctel (Jason Young) of Davenport, IA; her twin sister Julia Williams and sister Jennifer Hoctel, both of Lake Geneva, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Diana Hoctel, and her brother, James J. "Jimmy Jon" Hoctel.

Per Janie's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Friends and family are invited to share memories and condolences on the online memorial page found at https://www.reifffuneralhomeinc.com
