John J. Cody 62, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away Sunday, October 22, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. John has lived 38 years with a spinal cord injury.
Friends and relatives of John may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2017 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa where a wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Church. The Reiff Funeral Home in Farley is in charge of arrangements.
Services for John will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Rev. Dwayne Thoman Presiding. Burial will be held in Mount Olivet Cemetery at a later date.
John was born February 8, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Merlin "Bill" and Anastasia "Stasia" (Henkel) Cody. He is a 1973 graduate of Wahlert High School and a 1989 graduate of Loras College. John was a lineman for REC in Marion and Interstate Power in Dubuque prior to his injury.
On July 13, 1991 he was united in marriage to Susanne Potter in Dubuque, Iowa, the couple celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2017.
John was a member of the Colt Drum and Bugle Corps from 1965 to 1975. He was inducted into the Colts Hall of Fame in 2012 and was named corps member of the year in 1973.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Susanne "Sue" Cody of Dubuque; a son, Matthew Cody of Falling Waters, W. VA; a granddaughter, Alyssa of Dubuque; his siblings, Jan Cody of Dubuque, Kathleen Cody of Portland, OR, and Robert (Beth) Cody of Woodbury, MN; his godchild, Leah; nephews and nieces; a cousin Rick Leibfried; and Matt's mother, Betty.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Cody; a stepdaughter, Mary Beth and his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Nancy Potter.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Mercy ICU and everyone who has provided care and support over these 38 years, especially Phyllis, Laurie, Liz, Melissa and Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Megan.
In lieu of flower, donations may be made to Hospice of Dubuque or the Colt Drum and Bugle Corps.
