John Kane was born to eternal life on March 3, 2024.  He died peacefully in the presence of the kind and prayerful staff of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he lived for many years.  The Kane family is grateful for the wonderful care John received while residing there.

Visitation for John will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., on Friday, March 15, 2024, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Garryowen, Iowa.  Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Garryowen, Iowa with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Garryowen.  The Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.

John was born on August 7, 1945. He suffered from mental illness for most of his life but found meaning through prayer, reading, and letter writing.  He was always happy to see family and reminisce, talk about his faith, and upon leaving would often urge his visitors to adopt a particular devotion.  St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Benedict were his personal favorites. John was intelligent, well read, had a great sense of humor, and a memorable laugh.  He was a skilled carpenter and in his younger years, a very good athlete.

John is the much-loved brother of Colleen Welper, Patricia Nehrbass, Michael Kane, and Mary Darnieder.  He is preceded in death by his parents, John (Jay) and Bess Kane.
