He was born March 8, 1923 in Farley, Iowa, eldest son of John and Adeline (Lehnhoff) Spoden. He attended St. Paul School in Worthington, IA, which he had to leave to attend to the family farm, but proudly returned to graduate in 1942. Following high school he farmed with his father until he married the love of his life Florence M Kremer at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington, Iowa on June 26, 1947. He continued to farm for 52 years of his life on John's Creek Road, south of Farley. In 1994 they retired from farming and moved to Dyersville, IA. She preceded him in death on March 31, 2013.

Besides his dedication to farming, Karl most enjoyed helping others whenever he could, including his family, friends and neighbors. After the chores were done, you could have found him playing cards or dining out with his friends. He especially was devoted to Florence and provided for her daily care during their last days together as husband and wife. No truer words were ever spoken for Karl and Florence than "Til death do us part."

He was a member of St. Paul's Church in Worthington and later St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, Iowa.

He is survived by two sons, Bill (Mary Ellen) Spoden and Neil (Sue) Spoden both of Dyersville, IA; one son-in-law, Ed Bildstein of Petersburg, IA; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; two siblings, John "Jack" Spoden and Jean (John) Heiberger both of Epworth, IA.

He is also preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Ruth Ann Bildstein in 2004; 6 brothers-in-law and 6 sisters-in-law.

The family would like to thank all the staff and residents at River Bend Retirement Community that made Karl feel so welcomed and comfortable there. A Special thank you to Edna, Hospice of Dubuque and Mercy Home Care for all their assistance during his final days.
