He was born February 9, 1963 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Calvin and Marien (Bruggeman) McDermott. He was a 1981 graduate of the Western Dubuque High School in Epworth. He farmed for many years on the family farm then he worked for Flynn Concrete in Epworth and most recently with Bard Concrete in Dyersville, Iowa.
Matt was an avid outdoorsman. He loved coyote hunting, picking walnuts in the fall, mushroom hunting in the spring, and cutting firewood throughout the year with his kids, grandkids, and anyone that was around to help. He also enjoyed spending time in his garage with family and friends or inventing something new to make life easier and his latest was a walnut cracker. He was always eager to try his sisters' pies and banana nut bread; never saying who's was the best. Matt always had time to take his grandkids for a dirt bike ride which he enjoyed as much as they did.
He was a member of St. John's Parish in Placid, Iowa.
He is survived by four children, Rachel (Marty) Kinsella of Epworth, IA, Brenda (Andy "Whitey") White of Cascade, IA, Josh (Jackie) McDermott of Dyersville, IA and Emily McDermott at home; his grandchildren, the sparkles in his eye, Dylan, Justin, Spencer, Calvin, Jenavieve, Jack, and one on the way and Jonathan and Jamison; six siblings, Gerald (Anita) McDermott of Dyersville, IA, Kathy (Dennis) Soppe of Bankston, IA, Alan "Alphonse" (Eileen) McDermott, Mark "Burrhead" (Mary) McDermott, Laura Bergfeld, Bill "Willard" McDermott and Mamie (Bill) Weber all of Epworth, IA, a sister-in-law, Cindy McDermott of Peosta, IA.
