Obituary

Robert Joseph Walsh, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and proud veteran, passed away at home on December 15, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on March 23, 1952, in Cascade, Iowa, to Evelyn (Connolly) and James Milton Walsh, Robert went on to spend time all over the world, but always considered himself a small-town Iowan who devoted his life to family, country, and community.

A 1970 graduate of Aquin High School, Robert joined the United States Navy shortly thereafter. He proudly served during the Vietnam War and in Japan before returning home to marry his high school sweetheart, Susan Hosch, on December 7, 1974, in Cascade, Iowa. Together, they raised five children: Shannon (Andy) Milton, James (Andrea) Walsh, Jonathan (Amanda) Walsh, Adam (Erin) Walsh, and Erin Walsh.

Robert's dedication to service continued as he transitioned into a Navy recruiter, where he earned numerous accolades, including National Recruiter of the Year, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. After more than 22 years of faithful military service, he retired with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.  He was an active member of the Cascade American Legion Post #528 where he served as Commander.

Robert was a proud Irishman and had a deep love for his family. Robert cherished his role as "Papa Bob," delighting in attending his grandchildren's sporting events and activities where he could often be overheard providing one of his many "Bob-isms". He was an avid golfer, a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and enjoyed playing Euchre with friends and family. A true craftsman, Robert could often be found tinkering in his shop, always ready to lend a hand or share a story.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Susan, their five children, 11 grandchildren: Alex, Eli, Finley, Avery, Jace, Whitney, Micah, Rylie, Camden, Declan, and Kiernan; his three siblings Charlotte (Jim) Halverson, Monica Blankenship, and Jane (Herb) Aschtgen; in-laws, Bob (Sandy) Hosch, Mary Gossman, and Shirley Dolphin. He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Herbert and Eleanor (Zieser) Hosch; three brothers-in-law, Marty Dolphin, Richard Hosch, and Bob Blankenship; and a niece, Sara Hosch.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held at Reiff Funeral Home, 205 Hayes St SW, Cascade, IA 52033, on Friday, December 20th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m.  Visitation will also be held after 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be Saturday, December 21st at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthias Church, 411 4th Ave NW, Cascade, IA 52033. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa, with full military honors afforded by the Cascade American Legion Post #528.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

The family would like to thank his doctors and nurses for their benevolent care, along with a special thanks to the first responders and Fr. Mark Osterhaus for their compassion.
