Sharon A. McDermott, 69, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Unity Point Health Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.
Friends and relatives of Sharon may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at St. Joseph's the Worker Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 2 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m., Thursday at the Church.
Services for Sharon will held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 19, 2017 at St. Joseph's the Worker Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa with Rev. Gabriel Anderson presiding. Burial will be held in Holy Family Cemetery in New Melleray (rural Peosta), Iowa.
Sharon was born September 5, 1948 in Cascade, Iowa, daughter of Clifford J. "Shorty" and Lucille (McCarthy) Donovan. She is a 1966 graduate of Western Dubuque High School in Epworth, IA. She then attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, IA and Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, IA. She was employed at the former Dubuque Packing Co. as a Nurse and later at Finley Hospital in the ER Department until retiring in 1998.
She was united in marriage to Larry McDermott on October 25, 1974 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fillmore, IA. She enjoyed spending time with her family, taking photographs, traveling and winters in Arizona.
Sharon was a member of the Centralia-Peosta Fire Department and served as its first paramedic and as their Medical Director until retiring in 2010. Sharon was extremely dedicated to her role in Emergency Services. She was also a member of St. Joseph's the Worker Parish
She is survived by her husband, Larry McDermott of Dubuque, IA; children, Troy (Kate Conlon) McDermott of Dubuque, IA and their children Natalie and Clara, Tara (Bo) Duggan of Pewaukee, WI and their children Cooper and Maverick and Tina (Jon) Humston of Iowa City, IA and their children, Levi and Dallas; her Mother-in-law; Dorothy McDermott; three siblings, Patrick (Catherine) Donovan of Bernard, IA, Janet (Jim) Hanks of West Des Moines, IA and Phyllis (Fred) Urbain of Epworth, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Cherie McDermott of Epworth, IA, Terry (Kathy) McDermott of Peosta, IA and Tim (Lori) McDermott of Bernard, IA, Tom (Stephanie) McDermott of Cascade, IA, Todd (Dana) McDermott of Bernard, IA and Trace (Karen) McDermott of Marion, IA; along with several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and her father-in-law, Emmett McDermott.
A Sharon A. McDermott Memorial Fund has been established.
