Obituary

Theresa R. Hermsen, 85, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation for Theresa will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, where a prayer service will be held at 1:30 p.m.   Visitation will also be held after 9 a.m., Monday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Theresa at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 16, 2024, at the St. Boniface in New Vienna, Iowa with Rev. Chris Podhajsky presiding.  Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Farley, Iowa.

She was born August 7, 1939, in Farley, Iowa, daughter of Clarence and Augusta (Derga) Grobstick.  She is a graduate of the former St. Joseph's High School in Farley, Iowa.  On October 1, 1966, she was united in marriage to Clarence Hermsen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on August 9, 2011.

She started her employment at Greenwoods Grocery in Farley while in high school. After being home with her children while they were young, she began working at the St. Boniface Elementary school in their hot lunch program. She then worked at Hartig Drug in Dyersville until her retirement.


She was a very gentle and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and had full faith in God. She made the best pies and jelly and had a great sense of humor. She loved watching the Chicago Cubs and a touching highlight was to watch the Cubs play at Wrigley Field in 2019. She also liked to watch golf and loved to spend time with her friends and family.

She was a member of St. Boniface Parish in New Vienna, Iowa,

She is survived by her five children, Paul (Kim) Hermsen of Ankeny, IA, Sue Hermsen of Cedar Rapids, IA, Tim (Sandy) Hermsen of Dyersville, IA, Joejoe Hermsen of Omaha, NE, Jenny Hermsen of Dyersville, IA; two grandchildren, Payton and Jack Hermsen; and three step grandchildren, Kelsey (Brett) Gudenkauf, Courtney (Brandon) Goetzinger, and Kylie Steffensmieier; her brothers and sisters-in-laws, Dennis and Nancy Hermsen of Farley, Inez Hermsen of Manchester, and Doris Hermsen of Dyersville; and a very special friend, Fr. Carlos Paniagua-Monroy.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Clara Mae, Helen and Lucille Grobstick; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Olive (Schaul) Hermsen; brothers-in-law, Charles Hermsen in infancy, Jerry (Betty Gassman) Hermsen, Elmer (Eileen) Hermsen, Francis Hermsen, Alvin Hermsen; sisters-in-law, Theresa Hermsen in infancy and Rosemary (Tony) Rahe.

The family would like to thank the Nurses and staff at Stonehill Care Center for all the wonderful care and support they gave to Theresa.
