Thomas J. McDermott, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of Farley, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his family Monday, June 5, 2017, at Luther Manor in Dubuque, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of Tom may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, Iowa where a wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Farley American Legion Post #656 services will be at 7 p.m. and Knights of Columbus Council #2001 rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2017 at the funeral home.

Services for Tom will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid, Iowa with Rev. Michael Schueller Presiding. Burial will be held in St. John's Cemetery in Placid, Iowa with full military honors afford by the Farley American Legion Post #656.

He was born October 11, 1927 in Cascade, Iowa, son of Frances V. and Margaret (Clancy) McDermott. He is received his education from St. Joseph's schools in Farley, IA and Loras College in Dubuque, IA. On August 13, 1966 he was united in marriage to Jean Boyle at St. Aloysuis Catholic Church in South Garryowen, IA. Tom was an Army Veteran having served during the Korean War. He loved sports and enjoyed playing golf and bowling.

He was a member of St. Raphael's Parish in Dubuque, IA, and the Farley American Legion Post #656, Farley Knights of Columbus Council #2001. He served on Farley Development and St. Joseph's Parish boards and was on the Board of Directors for Grinnell Mutual Insurance and Farm Credit Service.

He is survived by his wife, Jean McDermott of Dubuque, IA; one son, Mike (Jessalyn) McDermott of Farley, IA; four grandchildren, Sydney, Amelia, Eleanor and Evelyn; five siblings, Elaine Brown of Farley, IA, Sr. Jeanette McDermott SDMM of Philadelphia, PA, Ramona Thomas of Dubuque, IA, Marlene (Dan) Reid of St. Paul, MN, and Gail Dolphin of Dubuque, IA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom "Slim" (Mary Jane) Boyle of Cascade, IA, Rosanne (John) Schmitt of St. Louis, MO and Judy Boyle of Cascade, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Francis P. McDermott Jr.; one sister, Margie (Robert) McAllister; brothers-in-law, Richard Dolphin, Bob McAllister, Loras Brown and Jack Boyle; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Boyle.
